Samsung Display's "creaseless" MONT Flex Display, shown off at CES 2026, has been rumored to be used on both Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8 and the iPhone Fold. And new reporting has potentially given us more insight into who will actually use it.
ZDNet Korea has reported that the tech demoed in the MONT Flex Display will appear in Samsung Mobile's Galaxy Z Fold 8. However, it won't be found in the iPhone Fold.
The display on show in Las Vegas, which uses a metal back, is likely going to be Samsung's version of the screen. However, the Apple edition will feature ultra-thin glass (UTG) instead.
This means we haven't actually clapped eyes on the exact tech the iPhone Fold will seemingly used. But since both are seemingly set to differ from the polymer base layers that existing foldables use, the MONT Flex Display is likely a closer approximation of what Apple will use than the screen of one of the foldable phones you can buy already is.
What the sources say
ZDNet Korea backs up these claims with some quotes from tipsters: "We understand that Samsung Electronics' MX division will decide whether to adopt the foldable OLED panel as early as the end of the first quarter," says one industry insider speaking to the site. "Since there are issues such as increased manufacturing costs due to changes in materials, we are continuing to check the actual utility of the panel."
A second source cited by ZDNet Korea filled in the details about the Apple foldable. "It would be impossible for Samsung Display to showcase the OLED panel for the foldable iPhone, which Apple has not even released yet, at a public event due to business reasons," the source says, later specifying that "strictly speaking, a different panel will be used" for the Apple foldable.
A concept worth watching
Samsung boasts that the Mont Flex Display reduces crease visibility compared to existing displays because of new adhesives used to stick all the layers of the screen together. This results in a more flexible folding screen, which then allows the severity of the bend to be reduced. There are apparently no other alterations to the layers that make up the display, hopefully meaning we will see similar results on the metal-backed Galaxy Z Fold version and the UTG-backed iPhone Fold version.
But when will we see these two foldables? Samsung will likely make the Galaxy Z Fold 8 official in summer this year, the same timing as the past several Z Fold announcements. Apple is believed to be launching the iPhone Fold, at long last, in September, the normal month for iPhone launches. So while there's still time to wait for both phones, hopefully we will get more details in the meantime that will flesh out what we know about these devices' screens and other specs.
